The G.A.I.N. Animal Shelter
G.A.I.N. has an automatically renewable contract with the Government of Guam to run the public animal pound. The G.A.I.N. Animal Shelter is located in Yigo and is open seven days a week from 9-5 for the public’s convenience. As part of its contractual agreement with the Guam Department of Agriculture, G.A.I.N. bears 95% of the cost of operating the shelter, about $90,000 per year. We rely on fund raising and the public’s donations of money and supplies to support this service.
In 2006, the Guam Legislature appropriated $50,000 for GAIN shelter management. The funds were received in April and we have been able to increase the employee hours. We have established a shelter director position.
G.A.I.N.is financially responsible for all maintenance, repair and construction at the Shelter. In April, 2004, G.A.I.N. dedicated a new cat facility, a 1,400 square foot building designed to house cats and provide a central work and storage station for the Shelter. The total cost of the building was $125,000, of which $100,000 was money which G.A.I.N. volunteers had raised over the years.
Adopt a Kennel
Our Adopt a Kennel project started in 2006 is a huge success. We have kennels available for adoption by individuals or companies for $500 per year. An acrylic sign is placed on the kennels with the donor’s name or logo.
Adopt a Banner
The GAIN shelter has a perimeter fence that could hold several banners to advertise companies or individuals. We will make a banner and place it on the fence for a yearly fee of $500. The banners will be in full color and 3’ x 6’.
2008 Guam’s Beautiful Boonie Babies Calendar: Email your order or send a request to purchase your 2008 calendar. Over 1,000 will be printed. Thanks to Ryan James and Graphic Center for providing the design and printing at a low rate for us.
iGive: If you shop on-line, click on iGive first! Set up GAIN as your charity and a percentage of all you buy will be donated to GAIN.
Shelter Adoption Program
Every animal adopted from the Shelter must be sterilized before it can be released. We charge a $35 adoption fee, which covers our costs of worming and vaccinating, and offer licensing and rabies inoculations as required by law.
In 2007, we found homes for 4,931 cats, dogs, and rabbits.
The Annual SNAP Clinic
We believe that the most effective method to reduce animal suffering on Guam is to eliminate the stray animal population. This in turn can only be accomplished through sterilization.
G.A.I.N. sponsors the annual Spay Neuter Assistance Program clinic, where we bring in a team of veterinarians and technicians from off-island, and sterilize as many cats and dogs as possible in eight days. We offer sterilization for free to those on public assistance, and otherwise charge only enough to cover costs. In the five years since G.A.I.N. started this program, we have sterilized over 3,500 cats and dogs.
