Persons wishing to adopt should visit the shelter and select an animal that meets their criteria. GAIN will assist in matching pets with people. Once selected, an application is completed. This screening process is required to be sure the person adopting realizes they are taking on the responsibility of an animal’s life and must care for it forever. Once approved, the adopter pays an adoption fee which as of January 1, 2012, is $60. This fee covers the initial worming and vaccination, microchip, and if the animal is 3 months or older the GovGuam pet license. If the animal is not previously sterilized an appointment is made at one of the four participating veterinarians. GAIN will take the animal to the veterinarian and the adopter can pick it up when sterilized. Other veterinarian services can be provided if the client wishes. The adopter is responsible for the cost of the spay/neuter as well as a rabies vaccination for animals over 3 months of age. Animals under six months or under two pounds in weight can be adopted without sterilizing if the adopter pays a deposit of $150. This deposit is returned to the adopted once the sterilization certificate is received at the Yigo Shelter. Volunteers are extremely instrumental for the success GAIN has seen thus far, and for GAIN to be able to carry forward with its mission. The shelter is always in need of folks to help feed, bathe, walk, and play with the animals. Foster parents are also vital in helping animals that are too young, sick, or need extra time to find a forever home.
